Blog Traffic: Patience Pays Off

Posted by gemsuraj on September 14, 2007

One of the mistakes many brand-new bloggers make is to expect the traffic and revenue to flow almost immediately upon going live. They believe having a niche blog and using the proper search terms will automatically alert others to their blogs existence. Unfortunately, the truth is that it takes time to build up a readership. In fact, it takes many bloggers a year or more to build an impressive reader base

If you’re not getting much traffic and aren’t sure why, it can be due to one of several factors:

Your blog is still too new:

Be patient. If you have a great resource, people can, and will come. It’s unrealistic to expect to see 100 or more visitors in the first few months. Most blogs don’t see that many people ever.

Your blog is unattractive:

Widgets are fun and ads bring in money, but too many flashy, shiny bells and whistles will turn off readers. Wait until you have a good base before you bring in the fun stuff and revenue boosters[/link]

Your blog isn’t holding their interest:

People visit blogs to be entertained or to learn something new. Daily rants, regular insults and rambling content without a point turn people off. If you’re giving an opinion, be prepared to present facts to back up your point of view. Instead of rehashing old news, break new stories.

Your blog isn’t being marketed properly:

It’s time consuming but if you want to build up traffic you have to get out there and promote yourself. You have to make your presence known. Many bloggers don’t like getting out there and pimping their blogs, but if you want to make it work, there’s no getting around it.

Getting others to take you seriously is hard work. It’s not enough to post and hope others come. You have to be interesting and you have to be shameless. Visit other successful bloggers and see how it’s done. In the end, patience and persistence do pay off.
